The municipality of Middlesex Centre, with its progressive mindset regarding sustainable design and construction of buildings, secured G. Douglas Vallee Limited as the Project Manager and Prime Consultant for the design of the new fire hall in the community of Coldstream.

Working with our team of specialty designers and sustainability experts, the Vallee team designed what is believed to be the the first Net Zero Energy/Carbon fire hall in Canada. Over the course of one year, the Coldstream Fire Station generates an amount of energy equal to or greater than the amount of energy the building consumes. Notable features of the design include:

• Building Massing and Siting: Envelope, structure and orientation designed to maximize passive heating, daylighting, and solar photovoltaic (PV) output;
• Envelope: R&U value upgrades;
• Lighting: LED lighting, occupancy sensors, natural lighting via clerestory windows and solar tubes for an energy-effective lighting
• Appliances and Fixtures: EPA ENERGY STAR rated appliances and low flow WaterSense water fixtures and fittings;
• HVAC: Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP), EER 16 package unit, plus radiant flooring in apparatus bay;
• PV System: 60 kW roof-mount photovoltaics system.
